Frequently Asked Questions

General Questions

What areas do you cover?

We're based in Steyning and cover Lancing, Worthing, Brighton, Hove, Horsham, Crawley, Chichester, and the wider Sussex area. If you're not sure whether your address falls within our radius, give us a call on 07850 965753 and we'll confirm before quoting.

How long have you been trading?

Jamie has been in the electrical trade for over 25 years and has run JMA Electrical for the last 15. We're a Checkatrade-approved member since 2014. Every job is led by Jamie personally, supported by an apprentice.

Are you NICEIC registered?

Yes. JMA Electrical is registered as an NICEIC Domestic Installer. Every job is carried out to the latest 18th Edition wiring regulations, properly tested, and signed off with the relevant certification. You can verify our registration on the NICEIC website.

Do you offer free quotes?

Yes. Quotes are free and valid for 30 days from the date of issue, with no obligation. Call us on 07850 965753, message us on WhatsApp, or use the quote form on the site and we'll come back to you with a clear, transparent price.

What are your working hours?

Standard working hours are Monday to Friday, 08:00 to 17:00. Saturday is normally a non-working day, although we can arrange Saturday visits for pre-booked work. We respond to genuine electrical emergencies 24/7 outside these hours, with after-hours rates.

How do I pay, and do you take a deposit?

For larger installations a 25% deposit may be requested before work starts to cover material costs and secure your booking. Final payment is due on completion by bank transfer. Smaller jobs are typically settled in full on the day. We'll always tell you the payment terms in the quote, never as a surprise.

How much does a full electrical installation cost?

A full installation or rewire typically runs between £5,500 and £7,500, depending on property size, layout, and the level of finish. We'll survey the property, talk through what you need, and come back with a fixed quote so you know exactly what you're paying for.

How long does a full rewire take?

Most domestic rewires take between three and six working days, depending on the size of the property and how easy the cable runs are. We aim to leave the property tidy and habitable at the end of each day, and we'll talk through the timeline before we start so you can plan around the work.

Will you handle Building Regulations sign-off?

Yes. As an NICEIC-registered installer, we self-certify the work under Part P Building Regulations and notify your local authority on your behalf. You'll receive the Electrical Installation Certificate and the Building Regs compliance paperwork to keep with the property's records.

Do you work with builders on new builds and extensions?

Yes. We're used to coming in alongside builders for first and second fix, coordinating with plasterers and kitchen fitters, and finishing on schedule. We're happy to talk to your project manager directly so the wiring slots in cleanly with everything else.

Is there a warranty on a full installation?

Yes. Every installation we sign off comes with a six-year NICEIC-backed workmanship guarantee. Materials are also covered by the manufacturer's warranty where applicable. If anything ever needs a second look, we're a phone call away.

Can I get a single light fitting installed?

Yes. We're happy to fit a single pendant, a feature light, or a chandelier. A typical single fitting starts at £140 including a clean, tested install. We'll talk through whether new circuits or switching are needed before quoting.

Do you install downlights and dimmers?

Yes. Recessed LED downlights are one of our most common requests, often paired with new dimmer switches or smart switching. We plan the layout based on the room, the joists, and how you actually want to use the space.

Can you fit a light I've already bought?

Absolutely. If you've bought a fitting yourself we'll install it cleanly and test it before sign-off. If anything's not quite right with the chosen fitting we'll tell you upfront, before we start, so you can swap it for one that suits.

Will you replace existing lights with LEDs?

Yes. Swapping older halogen or incandescent fittings to LED is a common upgrade and usually pays for itself quickly through lower running costs. Most fittings can be converted without changing the existing wiring, though we'll inspect first to confirm.

Can I get outside lighting installed?

Yes. We install garden lights, driveway and path lights, security lights with PIR sensors, and decorative wall and bollard fittings across Sussex. Every outdoor install uses IP-rated fittings and weather-sealed connections.

How much does outside lighting cost?

Outside lighting jobs typically range from £80 for a single replacement security light up to £500 for a more involved scheme with multiple fittings, sensors, and switching. We quote per project so you only pay for what you need.

Do you install motion-activated security lights?

Yes. PIR (passive infrared) motion sensors are a common upgrade for drives, garages, and back gardens. We can fit standalone PIR floods or integrate sensor switching across multiple fittings, with adjustable sensitivity and timeout settings.

Will you bury cable to avoid surface clips?

Where it's the right call, yes. For garden runs we'll usually trench and bury armoured cable rather than surface-clip along walls and fences. We'll talk through the route before we start so you know exactly where the cable's going.

When do I need a consumer unit upgrade?

If your existing board uses old-style rewireable fuses, has a plastic enclosure, or lacks RCD protection on every circuit, it's time to upgrade. Older boards are no longer compliant with current 18th Edition wiring regulations, and they're a common fail item on EICRs.

How much does a consumer unit upgrade cost?

A typical domestic consumer unit upgrade costs between £550 and £850, including the new metal-clad RCD/RCBO board, the labour, the insulation testing, and the installation certificate. We'll confirm the exact price after a quick survey.

How long does it take to replace a consumer unit?

Most replacements are done in a single day, with the power off for a few hours during the swap. We'll let you know in advance roughly when the supply will be down so you can plan around it. Everything is tested before we put the new board into service.

What brands of consumer unit do you fit?

We fit quality boards from Hager, Wylex, MK, and other well-respected UK manufacturers. We'll recommend the right unit based on the size and use of the property, and we always quote a metal-clad option that meets the current regulations.

Do I get certification with the new board?

Yes. Every consumer unit upgrade comes with a full Electrical Installation Certificate, the Building Regs Part P compliance paperwork, and a clear breakdown of which circuit is which on the new board. Keep them safe, you'll need them for any future EICR or property sale.

Who can wire a new garden room or outbuilding?

We can. We provide first and second fix wiring for new garden rooms, garden offices, garages, workshops, and outbuildings. We work with the supply route and the existing main board to integrate the new space cleanly.

Can you wire a loft conversion?

Yes. Loft conversions are a regular job for us. We work alongside the builder or directly with the homeowner, handling lighting, sockets, smoke detection wired into the existing system, and any heating controls.

How much does outbuilding or loft wiring cost?

First fix work for an outbuilding or loft conversion typically runs between £1,500 and £3,000, depending on the supply route, distance from the main board, and the number of circuits. Larger or more complex jobs are quoted on a per-project basis.

Will the outbuilding need its own consumer unit?

It depends on the load and the cable route. For larger spaces or longer runs we'll usually fit a sub-board in the new building. For smaller projects we can extend an existing circuit. We'll explain the options as part of the quote.

What is an EICR and do I need one?

An EICR (Electrical Installation Condition Report) is the formal periodic safety check on a property's wiring. Landlords are legally required to hold a current report. Buyers and sellers often need one for the conveyancing pile, and homeowners use them to confirm an older installation is still safe.

How much does an EICR cost?

Most domestic EICRs start from £150 for a smaller property and are quoted up-front before we visit, so there are no surprises. Tell us the property's address and rough size and we'll come back with a fixed price.

How long does an EICR take?

A standard domestic EICR usually takes between two and four hours, depending on property size and how accessible the consumer unit, sockets, and lighting are. The certificate is issued on the day where possible, or shortly after if remedials are needed.

What happens if the report flags issues?

We explain any C1, C2, or C3 issues in plain English rather than just listing codes. Where remedial work is needed, we quote it clearly and separately so you can decide what to do. If issues are minor, we can often fix them on the same visit and re-test before issuing the certificate.

Do you do landlord EICRs?

Yes. Landlord EICRs make up a regular part of our work. We carry out the inspection to the 18th Edition standard, issue the certificate, and can carry out any required remedial work to bring the property up to compliance.
